If you have already looked at Slapdash or are planning to then without further adieu here’s 8 things we wished we would have said but probably didn’t because we’re lousy sales people:
ONE:
She’s had full time live-in caretakers. Our boat has taken care of us and we’ve returned the favour. This is a huge advantage Slapdash has over lightly used boats on the market. When something pops up we are there to notice it right away and fix it before it becomes a bigger problem. Consider this; for 5 years we have been in a perpetual state of getting our Gemini 105Mc passage ready. Whether crossing the Atlantic or navigating the infamous Malacca Straight there’s always been another passage on the horizon so we simply haven’t been able to let any maintenance issues slide. Ask around; boats that get used are in better shape.
TWO:
No surprises. We are the second owners and bought Slapdash from a retired airline pilot and a self confessed neat freak. “Meticulous owners” was an understatement in their case. Maintenance checklists, detailed records and their obvious care gave us immediate confidence. They absolutely pampered this boat for 3 years before passing her on to us. We spent two days with them reviewing their maintenance cycles, systems and general upkeep and adopted their practices and continued the legacy. Since then the boats history has been well documented.
THREE:
Price. The average market price for used Gemini 105Mc’s from years ranging 2001-2006 right now is $129,240. This was determined by checking the current listings in that range and averaging the list prices. It’s easy to check for yourself. There are cheaper boats (terrible condition) and ones in better condition (listed at 20-50K higher). We have done our homework and are confident that at $118,900 we are offering the best value on a used Gemini on the market today.
FOUR:
Spares and extras. We were in active cruising mode right up to the day we arrived in Annapolis which means that she is in full ‘keep on truckin’ mode. Everything we needed to go another thousand or ten thousand miles was with us. So keep in mind the things that Slapdash comes with: EPIRB, handheld VHF, Honda generator, Kayak, dinghy and engine, hundreds of feet of spare lines, and spares up the ying yang… the list goes on. Thousands and thousands of dollars in extras.
FIVE:
Slapdash deserved to be listed for sale by her owners. We started this DIY trip around the world by researching and buying the boat ourselves, doing all that in between stuff ourselves, and now we would like to finish it by selling her ourselves. You will be dealing with people that know the boat intimately. Saving the broker’s fees and commissions means we have been able to price the boat aggressively. We get a fast sale, and you get a great deal. Easy.
SIX:
We talked a lot about good maintenance and incredible cleanliness but don’t worry, we’re shallow too. Aesthetics are just as important to us and Slapdash is one sexy kitten. Ever been on a boat and feel like you’re visiting grandmother’s house? Not in this clutter free zone. Slapdash is sharp, modern, clean, and 100% doily free. We like to dinghy out to our boat and feel a sense of pride. No doll collections or other bric-a-brac to clutter up the image of you in here with your stuff. We take a lot of pride in this and you will notice. So will envious neighbors.
SEVEN:
It’s a great story; Slapdash is the only Gemini in the world to have been around the world. Check her press in Latitude 38 (June 2012), upcoming SpinSheet, CBC Radio, Jetsetcitizen.com, Interviewwithacruiser.blogspot.com, Calgary Beacon and more. Her incredible adventures have been well documented. Slapdash has very publicly proved herself a capable, strong and FUN boat. Whether you need a holiday home in a nice marina somewhere, and island hopper, coastal cruiser, or big-time passage maker Slapdash has done it all and is ready when you are.
EIGHT:
Somebody else will buy Slapdash, soon. We have decided to sell this boat and will. We have new plans and intend to act fast. Slapdash will not sit on the market for months or rot in a boatyard. If you have been considering a sailboat, catamaran, Gemini, and are in the position to buy one now you need to seriously consider getting a look at this boat and making an offer very soon.

Please call me at [removed by admin]
I would like to come down to Annapolis (from Philadelphia)to have someone take me out on the boat for an afternoon to go over the systems, and then I could take the next step.
Thanks-
Vincent
Posted by Vincent Gallagher, Esquire | 30. Jul, 2012, 6:56 amHappy to show you around the boat on the dock but we’re actively showing her this week so a sea trial would be a tad challenging. We can talk about that this aft though.
Posted by theslapdash | 30. Jul, 2012, 9:09 pmI’m sick! It kills me to not yet be in a position financially to be hunting Gemini’s. It hurts so bad. Originally we felt we wanted to do just what you did, find a newer boat that hasn’t been “used up” or had a chance to have been neglected. Now with the non-sale of our kitty and the possibility of taking much less for our kitty we may be going a slightly more “used” boat. It hurts to not have a chance at “Slapdash” Ouch! (we don’t “borrow” money)
So, not so seriously, I am now willing to offer 20 cases of your choice beer and a large 20 cash deposit with the balance due after kitty sells.
Posted by Ken Page | 30. Jul, 2012, 5:55 amA tiny bit more serious now, big G’s deposit…and….and…we’ll bring her to Tortola and hang till the deal is done!
Posted by Ken Page | 30. Jul, 2012, 6:28 amPullin’ out the big guns hey Ken? Beer? D’ah! Talk about hitting where it hurts. You have no idea how much I had to calm Capt Seth down. “No Seth, beer is not food”. “No Seth, we can’t live on love”. A tad more seriously though, we know how much you dig Slappy and it hurts us too. But there’s a Slappy out there with your name on it. Trust in that my horse meat eating friend. And it also doesn’t hurt to make cat calling noises. See Lorry’s comment above. It’s like a rain dance but makes you look nuttier.
Posted by theslapdash | 30. Jul, 2012, 9:41 pmHere kitty, kitty, kitty, I want to stay out till 5:30 in the morning with you guys again. I’ll drive!
Posted by Ken Page | 31. Jul, 2012, 6:25 amVery envious. I’ve looked at a few local geminis and having all the extras and especially the two of you caring for it! Wow! What a steal!!! I wish I had extra $118,000 right now… It’d be tied up at my dock in a few days!!! Good luck with the sale!!! And the subsequent Sails!!! :)
Posted by Jamie Maloney | 30. Jul, 2012, 5:31 amHey thanks so much for saying that Jamie. That’s really cool. I’m also a big fan of the play on words so you had me at Hello. We’ll get along you and I.
Posted by theslapdash | 30. Jul, 2012, 9:51 pmJust a random question on your Gemini. We have a big sailing trip planned in roughly 2 years and had intended to purchase them. Do you guys have any desire what so ever to do a sell and lease back of the boat? Not sure exact terms yet but essentially we would buy and you would lease back for the two years? Again this is super preliminary but let me know if that is something that peaks your interest.
thanks
Posted by Robert | 30. Jul, 2012, 5:28 amExtra points for a great and creative solution. The only thing is, we’re committed to a job in Tortola this fall and it wouldn’t suit our plans. I wish you guys the best of luck with your trip and I really hope you’ll keep in touch so we can follow your adventures. Happy Travels!
